CARLISLE, Pa. – The No. 9 Ursinus College field hockey team (7-3, 3-1), lost its first game in Centennial Conference play on Saturday, coming up just short, 3-2, on the road to Dickinson. The two teams headed into the half tied 2-2, but a Red Devils goal in the third quarter proved to be the difference.
Like last weekend at Gettysburg, the Bears found the back of the cage early. Devon Carroll scored her ninth goal of the season on a penalty corner in the 6th minute to give Ursinus the early lead. The Bears kept the pressure on, forcing another penalty corner. Brianne Nicholas' initial shot was blocked, but Erin Saybolt was there for the clean-up to give the Bears a 2-0 lead through the first frame.
The home Red Devils answered in the second quarter on a penalty corner of their own to cut the Bears lead to one and then a goal with less than a minute remaining in the half tied the score at two. Ursinus had two late penalty corners but were unable to find the back of the cage.
The Red Devils kept the pressure on in the second half and took the lead in the game's 38th minute, scoring their third unanswered goal. The Bears took three penalty corners in the third quarter but were unable to convert.
Trailing by one, the Bears sent heavy pressure early in the final quarter. In the first five minutes of the final frame, Ursinus earned four penalty corners and fired three shots but could not get the equalizer as the Red Devils held on the rest of the way.
The Bears were outshot by the Red Devils, 13-8, but held a 12-7 advantage in penalty corners. Carroll and Saybolt led the team with three shots apiece.

After dropping their last two games, the No. 9 Bears will look to bounce back at home against Haverford Wednesday.
