Carroll Leads Field Hockey Past Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The No. 10 Ursinus College field hockey team recorded its second straight win to open Centennial Conference play, defeating Swarthmore, 4-0, on Wednesday evening. Junior midfielder Devon Carroll recorded her second multi-goal game of the season as she found the back of the cage twice on a pair of penalty corners.

The Bears (6-1, 2-0) had a plethora of opportunities early on, picking up right where they left off on Saturday against McDaniel. The Ursinus attack opened with seven shots in the first quarter to go along with three penalty corners but the Bears were unable to take advantage. Finally, Jamie Mayer put the Bears on the board five minutes into the second quarter as she found the back of the cage from the top of the circle. Carroll scored her first of the night just 2:53 later, capitalizing on a penalty corner with an insertion from Mary Margaret Baldy, who registered her first point of the season and the second of her career.

The relentless Bears attack continued into the second half. Gemma Dufoe began the change of ends with a pair of shots that just missed and then a Laura Rothschild shot set up the Bears' 12th penalty corner of the evening. This time it was Rothschild who pushed the ball into play, finding Carroll once again for her second goal of the night to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

In the final frame with the final seconds ticking away, Dufoe added a fourth goal as she scored with 2.3 seconds remaining on a cross from Plummer.

Ursinus outshot the Garnet 27-2 as goalkeeper Addie Frey tallied her third shutout of the season. Erin Saybolt led the Bears with eight shots.
