COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Five different Ursinus College field hockey players registered goals in a 5-2 non-conference victory over Washington and Lee at Snell Field.
Ursinus (9-4) faced an early deficit but the Bears were able to put together a streak of five unanswered goals to blow by the Generals on their way to keeping their home record unblemished at 5-0.
Senior Mikayla Jordan finished with a goal and assisted on two others for the 20th-ranked Bears, who have won six in a row on Snell Field dating back to last season.
The Generals (5-7) got on the scoreboard less than five minutes in when leading scorer Lauren Paolano knocked in the rebound of her own shot.
The Bears started their flurry when sophomore Zia Cooper scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career. Cooper capitalized off a rebound attempt in the 11th minute.
Ursinus sophomore Devon Carroll put the Bears up 2-1 in the 23rd minute on an assist from Jordan. A few minutes later, junior Erin Saybolt sent in a steaming blast off a penalty corner for her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Saybolt's goal was inserted beautifully by Jordan.
Ursinus took a 3-1 lead to the break, keeping the Generals at bay after their early goal.
Just over two minutes into the second stanza, Jordan tacked on a goal to pair with her two assists in the match. Jordan was on the doorstep and deflected in Carroll's shot from the circle.
Freshman Jamie Mayer joined in on the scoring fun when she sent in an unassisted tally.
After their early goal, Washington and Lee was kept off the scoring ledger until Haley Tucker tacked on a late goal in the 65th minute.
Ursinus kept Washington and Lee's goalie Ariyel Yavalar busy throughout the match, forcing her into 12 saves. The Bears ripped 21 total shots and were awarded 14 penalty corners. The Generals took 14 shots and just five corners.
Ursinus senior goalie Jules Singer posted the win with eight saves. Sophomore Addie Frey came on halfway through the second half in relief. Frey made one save.
The Bears host Catholic Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
