Field Hockey Blanks Bryn Mawr

Field Hockey Blanks Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Brooke Overly had a hand in all three goals as the Ursinus College field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-0 Centennial Conference victory at Bryn Mawr on Saturday.

The senior forward scored two goals of her own and assisted on the other – by sophomore Gemma Dufoe – to follow up a hat trick a week ago against Johns Hopkins with another impressive offensive effort. With Hopkins' 2-1 victory over Franklin & Marshall, Ursinus (10-7, 8-2) is the number three seed for the CC tournament and will take on the second-seeded Diplomats in the semifinals on Friday.

The Bears led Bryn Mawr (6-11, 0-10) just 1-0 midway through the second half before tacking on two more for some breathing room. Ursinus has now defeated the Owls 17 years in a row, outscoring them 137-1 over that span.

Overly got the scoring started 10:36 into the contest, but despite a bevy of corner opportunities (15-0 in favor of the Bears for the game) and close calls, the visitors were unable to expand upon their lead until well into the second stanza. Sophomore Erin Saybolt saw one of her eight shots slide inches wide of the left side of the cage, and Overly rang the post.

Bryn Mawr goalie Angela Meng made two saves early in the second half before Ursinus added a second goal, this time from Dufoe on a feed from Overly following a corner with 18:10 to play. About six minutes later, Overly took a pass from freshman Devon Carroll, dodged Meng and scored into an open net for a 3-0 advantage. Saybolt hit the post with just under nine minutes left.

Junior Jules Singer faced two shots, but neither was on frame as she easily posted her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career.

The field hockey team now braces for another postseason showdown with F&M – albeit a little earlier than expected. The teams have faced off for the CC crown each of the past four seasons, but one will not make the final this time around. Game time for Friday's semifinal contest will be announced on Monday.
