Field Hockey drops overtime contest to William Smith, 5-4

GENEVA, N.Y. – Alessandra Patrizio's goal 3:14 into the first overtime was the game-winner as the 18th-ranked William Smith Herons (2-0) defeated seventh-ranked Ursinus (1-1) 5-4 in field hockey play on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears had rallied from a 2-0 deficit by scoring four straight goals, before William Smith scored three straight, including the game-winner.

For Ursinus, senior forward Danielle Stong (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) had two goals and an assist for the Bears, while senior midfielder Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and junior forward Amber Steigerwalt (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) added in goals. Senior midfielder Kelsey Reed (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), Steigerwalt and Keenan also had assists.

After William Smith scored two goals in the first 17 minutes, Ursinus got on the board at 21 minutes even as Stong scored on an assist from Keenan. Just under eight minutes later, Keenan scored on a penalty corner off assists from Reed and Stong.

In the second half, Ursinus took a 3-2 lead when Steigerwalt put a shot in on a redirection from Reed, followed by Stong's second goal at 41:146 on an assist from Steigerwalt.

Patrizio scored for William Smith at 44:52, before Hannah Wood tied the score at 60:38 on a shot around Ursinus senior goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood).

In the overtime, Ursinus had a shot at 70:36 by Keenan, which was saved by Heron goalkeeper Biz Chirco. Ursinus then had a penalty corner at 71:14 but did not get a shot off.

Ursinus will open its home schedule on Wednesday against Messiah.
