Field Hockey knocks off tenth-ranked William Smith, 3-2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College field hockey Team used three first period goals to down tenth-ranked William Smith 3-2 at home on Saturday.

Ursinus (7-5) took the lead early as freshman forward Samantha Macchio (Reading, Conn./Joel Barlow) converted a pass from Catherine Bitterly (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) just over three minutes into the period.  Just over ten minutes later, senior midfielder Rachel Pandl (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) redirected a pass from Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) into the far corner of the cage to put the Bears up 2-0.  Ursinus' third and final goal was scored by Kennan off a pass from Abby Wood (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional).

However, William Smith (10-2) would not go quietly.  Six minutes into the second half, senior forward Annie Kietzman (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) put the Herons up on the board, beating Ursinus goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) one on one.  Fifteen minutes into the second half, the Herons closed within one off a goal from junior forward Julia Simmons (Littleon, Colo./Colorado Academy).

A stingy defense would stymie the Herons for the conclusion of the match.  Ursinus goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito ended the game with seven saves on nine shots.  The Bears also took six shots on net.

The Bears travel to West Chester tomorrow to take on the Golden Rams in the annual Snell Cup game.  Game time is 1:00 PM.
