Football falls to Juniata, 38-10

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – A 24-point second quarter, with three touchdowns coming in the final 9:05 of that quarter, doomed Ursinus as the Bears (5-1, 4-1 Centennial) were handed their first loss of the season in a 38-10 defeat at Juniata (3-3, 2-3 Centennial) Saturday afternoon.

Juniata senior quarterback Ward Udinski accounted for all three touchdowns in that quarter, as he threw for two and ran for one in the win. Udinski threw for 251 yardsa and three scores on the day.

Ursinus got 117 yards from senior quarterback Kevin Monahan, and 60 yards rushing from senior running back Taylor Paul.

Junior wide receiver Safi Hasseeb, playing in his first game since Gettysburg, caught three passes for 19 yards.

Junior defensive back Kyle Adkins had a game-high 13 tackles, including ten solo stops for the Bears. He also added an interception.

Ursinus' lone touchdown came in the first quarter, when senior defensive end Mike Moronese recovered a fumble on the Ursinus 42-yard line with 12:04 left. Rafter had forced the fumble on Udinski.

Nine plays later, junior fullback Nick Pustizzi ran from one-yard out with 8:22 left, capping a 58-yard drive to take the 7-0 lead.

Ursinus was able to stop Juniata on its next drive, then drove the ball down to the Eagle 28, where junior kicker Eric Boyer attempted a 45-yard field goal that went wide right with 2:28 left.

Juniata got on the board on its next drive, when Ken Kysor kicked a 22-yard field goal 1:33 into the second quarter, cutting the Ursinus lead to 7-3.

The Eagles would score on their next two drives, starting with a 18-yard touchdown pass from Udinski to Kirby Breault with 9:05 left for a 10-7 lead. Then, the Eagles would convert on a Monahan interception and go 50-yards in eight plays capped by a 1-yard run from Udinski for a 17-7 lead with 2:13 left.

Ursinus would get the ball back with 44 seconds left in the half on a senior defensive back Max DeNardo interception at the Ursinus 24-yard line. However, Monahan would throw an interception, giving the Eagles the ball right back at the Bears 16-yard line. On the next play, Udinski threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Slutter with 25 left for a 24-7 lead.

Ursinus would score its final points of the game in the third quarter when Boyer kicked a 21-yard field goal with 8:02 left after a 13-play drive stalled at the Eagles' 4-yard line. Juniata would answer back with a 14-play, 78-yard drive that saw Deonte Alston score from two yards out and a 31-10 lead.

Juniata scored with 1:03 left in the game when Udinski found Kyle Schuck with a 14-yard touchdown pass for the final 38-10 margin.

Ursinus finished with 132 yards on the ground and 117 in the air on the day, and did not allow a sack.

The Bears will return home next Saturday, for Homecoming and will host Susquehanna.
