Football falls to Johns Hopkins, 24-18

BALTIMORE, Md – Ursinus gave tenth-ranked Johns Hopkins everything it could handle on Saturday, before the Blue Jays scored two fourth quarter touchdowns in a 24-18 win over the Bears (6-2, 5-2 Centennial) on Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field.

The Bears, down six with 1:35 left had the ball but could not put together the game-winning drive as it stalled on fourth down at the Blue Jays' 45.

Still, the Bears turned in some outstanding performances and had a 18-10 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Senior wide receiver Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishop Wood) caught eight passes for 202 yards and two scores, including an outstanding 69-yard catch from junior quarterback Kevin Monahan (East Windsor, N.J./Hightstown) with 4:12 left in the first as he caught the ball over a Hopkins (8-0, 7-0 Centennial) defender.

Monahan finished 16-for-40 with 280 yards and two scores, both to Rahill.

Junior defensive back Matt Glowacki (Spring City, Pa./Spring-Ford) finished the day with 15 tackles to lead both sides, including a game-high ten stops.

Hopkins was led by sophomore running back Brandon Cherry who had 122 yards on 25 carries.

Hopkins struck first as the Blue Jays got a 32-yard field goal from Nick Campbell with 6:23 left for a 3-0 lead.

Ursinus went up 6-3 with 4:12 left when Monahan found Rahill for a 69-yard pass down the visiting sideline. On the ensuing kick off, Hopkins fumbled the ball at the one and recovered it in the end zone, resulting in a team safety for the Bears and an 8-3 lead.

Ursinus looked to up the lead as senior linebacker Brian Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa./Episcopal) intercepted a pass with 11:51 left in the first half at the Hopkins 36, but, the Bears could not convert.

Hopkins took the lead back at 10-8 with 5:32 left as JD Abbott rushed for a 3-yard score.

The defensive unit came up big for Ursinus with 14.6 left in the second quarter, as sophomore defensive back Kyle Adkins (Holland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) sacked Blue Jay quarterback Robbie Matey at the Ursinus 7, forcing a fumble which was recovered by sophomore defensive end Steve Ambs (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove).

Ursinus took a 15-10 lead when Monahan found Rahill for a 76-yard touchdown pass down the middle with 10:17 left. The Bears, on their next drive, got a 36-yard field goal from sophomore Eric Boyer (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin) with 4:51 left for a 18-10 lead.

Hopkins got to within two at 18-16 at the start of the fourth quarter when Matey found Daniel Wodicka for a 8-yard score with 13:18 left. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful when the Hopkins receiver caught the ball after he stepped out of bounds.

The final score for Hopkins, coming at 6:30 left on the clock, was a 16-yard pass from Matey to Wodicka.

Ursinus will host Muhlenberg next Saturday at 1.
