BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Ursinus College sophomore quarterback Chris Curran (Oceanview, N.J./Ocean City) rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another as the Bears (3-2, 3-1 Centennial) routed Moravian (1-4, 1-3 Centennial) 42-7 Saturday afternoon.

The win marks the first victory over Moravian since 2007 and gave the Bears its third straight win heading into the conference wide bye week.

Curran set career highs in passing yardage at 314 and completed a career best 30 passes on 40 attempts. He hit eight different receivers, led by eight catches from sophomore wide out Jerry Rahill (Chalfont, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Rahill had the lone touchdown catch, while senior wide receiver Al Desiderio (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) had six catches for 58 yards.

While the offensive unit produced 42 points, the defensive unit did its job as well, holding Moravian to just 143 yards of total offense and nine first downs.

Sophomore defensive back Matt Ruby (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove Area) had a team-best seven tackles including six solo stops, all coming on kickoff coverage. Senior linebacker Greg Martell (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) and junior defensive back Scott Gardus (Allentown, Pa./Salisbury Township) each had interceptions.

Gaining 410 yards of total offense, the Bears held the ball for 40:02 in the game, with 10-plus minutes of possession in three of the four quarters. The Bears were also five-for-five in the red zone.

Moravian got 40 yards rushing from running back Joe Tegan, who scored the Greyhounds lone touchdown in the first quarter. Quarterback Robbie Moyer was 8-for-22 for 80 yards.

Ursinus scored on its first drive, going 65 yards in nine plays, capped by a 1-yard run from Curran with 11:03 left for a 7-0 lead. Both teams then traded possessions, before Moravian got on the board via a four-play, 33 yard drive ending with a 1-yard run by Tegan with 6:33 left to tie the score at 7-all.

Ursinus' next drive stalled, but, on Moravian's first play from its own 22, Martell picked off a pass at the Greyhound 34 and returned it to the 29. Three plays later, sophomore full back Drae Lewis (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) rushed from two-yards out for a 14-7 Ursinus lead.

Ursinus went up 21-7 2:07 into the second quarter as Curran found Rahill for a 26-yard score with 12:53 left. Moravian then drove to the Ursinus 39 before its drive stalled. However, the Greyhounds special teams unit was able to pin the Bears at their own 1-yard line.

The next drive covered 99-yards in 18 plays,which saw Ursinus face a 2nd-and-38 at one point. The Bears converted three third downs along the way during the 8:27 drive, which ended on a 1-yard run by Curran with 15 seconds left.

Moravian, aided by a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kickoff, got down the Ursinus 25 yard line. Before the snap, Ursinus was hit with another 15-yard penalty which put the ball at the Bears' 12-yard line. However, Ian Heck's 29 yard field goal went wide right as time expired.

Gardus' interception with five minutes left in the third quarter set up the Bears next scoring drive. Ursinus went 52 yards in nine-plays, with Curran picking up a one-yard touchdown plunge and a 35-7 lead.

Lewis scored Ursinus' final touchdown with five minutes left in the fourth, as he rushed from three yards out. He accounted for all 43 yards on the scoring drive, giving Ursinus a 42-7 lead.

Sophomore kicker Michael Bennett (Maple Glen, Pa./La Salle College HS) was a perfect 6-for-6 on PAT kicks, while junior punter Derek Giannetti (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) averaged 36.4 yards on five punts.

Ursinus will take a week off, before hosting Juniata next Saturday, October 15.
