SANFORD, Fla. – The Ursinus College baseball team smashed six home runs and continued its string of exceptional pitching in a doubleheader sweep of Becker on Wednesday.
Dom Fiorentino and Alex Mumme each went yard twice for the Bears (7-3), who improved to 6-2 on their Florida trip. Mike Stanziale provided the go-ahead runs with a two-run double in the late stages of a 5-2 victory in the opener, and Mumme homered twice in a 12-3 game two rout.
With three runs scored in the second game, Mumme tied the program record of 129.
Game 1
Antolick gave up four hits in the first two innings, but managed to work around consistent traffic on the base paths by striking out three in each frame. Antolick's defense let him down with back-to-back errors to begin the third, which ultimately led to Becker grabbing the first run of the game.
The Bears put up zeroes until the bottom of the fifth, when Connor Barrett and Fiorentino went back-to-back to put Ursinus on top 2-1 in the blink of an eye. The home run was the first of Barrett's career.
A leadoff double led to a tying run for the Hawks in the sixth. But Jake Supran reached on an error to pave the way for a big bottom half, as Tom Jacobs reached on a bunt single before Mike Stanziale roped a two-run double to right-center field to put the Bears on top for good. Stanziale came around to score on another error for an insurance tally.
Antolick worked around a one-out double in the seventh to nail down his first collegiate win. The rookie right-hander scattered six hits and gave up two runs – one earned – with seven strikeouts. He did not walk a batter and threw 69 of his 95 pitches for strikes.
Game 2
The Bears got right back to their ball-bashing ways in the nightcap, with Mumme popping a two-run homer in a three-run first inning that also included a two-out RBI single from Kyle Supran.
Mumme's blast moved him into second in program history with 107 career RBI.
Becker got one back in the bottom half, but James Schuld was able to strand two in scoring position to preserve a multi-run lead.
Fiorentino went deep for the second time in the second inning, a two-out solo shot that moved him into fifth on the all-time charts with the 13th round-tripper of his career.
Stanziale crushed a three-run homer to make it 8-1 in the fifth, and Mumme's second two-run blast extended the lead to 11-2 in the sixth. When Mumme crossed the plate, he officially pulled even with Mike Gizzi '03 and Rich Barrett '01 for the all-time lead with 129 runs.
Mumme was one of three players with multiple hits, RBI, and runs scored, going 2-for-3 with three runs and four RBI. Stanziale was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI, and Scavone finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.
Kyle Supran went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Fiorentino had two hits and scored three times.
Schuld settled down nicely to earn his second win, making it through five innings while allowing only two earned runs. He struck out five without walking a batter. David Kratz and R.J. Grace combined for two scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
