SWARTHMORE, Pa. – After scoring 26 runs in a historic sweep of Johns Hopkins the day prior, the Ursinus College baseball team's bats went cold in a 10-1 setback at No. 6 Swarthmore on Sunday.
The Bears (12-10, 3-3) were limited to a season-low four hits by Swarthmore ace Jack Corkery, who pitched into the ninth and received plenty of support from his own meteoric offense.
The Garnet (16-6, 4-2) nearly let a five-run ninth-inning lead slip away in the teams' first meeting earlier in the week, but this time the hosts got on top early and never relented. Swarthmore's 2-6 hitters combined to go 13-for-21 with a home run, two doubles, eight RBI, and eight runs scored on the afternoon.
Swarthmore broke out the bats in the bottom of the first as Charles Levitt – who finished 4-for-5 with a homer and scored three times – doubled with one out and scored on a single by Jackson Roberts. Michael Sepe followed with an RBI double, although Ursinus senior David Drea was able to limit the damage to two runs.
After Conor Elliott's RBI single in the third made it 3-0, the home side broke it wide open with a five-run fourth. Elliott's two-run single kept the inning going with two outs, and Holden Bridge followed with one of his own to cap the outburst and make it an 8-0 game.
Levitt hit a solo homer in the fifth and Elliott added another run-scoring single in the sixth before junior Dom Fiorentino prevented a shutout with an RBI groundout in the top of the eighth.
Sophomore Tom Jacobs, who went 4-for-7 with a pair of doubles in Saturday's sweep of the Blue Jays, produced the lone extra-base hit for the normally potent Ursinus offense. Jacobs doubled with one out in the third but was caught stealing at third to end the inning. Sophomore Eric Gross scored the only run for the Bears.
Drea was charged with eight runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings before giving way to four relievers. Senior Mark LeDuc tossed a scoreless seventh, and freshman Luke Verga worked a scoreless eighth.
The Bears continue conference play at Haverford on Tuesday.
