COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – For the first time since the 2009 season, the Ursinus College baseball team scored a victory over Johns Hopkins, beating the Blue Jays in game one of a doubleheader 7-6 in ten innings.
In game two, the Blue Jays (18-12, 6-7 CC) struck for five runs in the first in a 14-3 win over the Bears (14-14, 6-8 CC).
Game one saw most of the action in the latter innings, as the team combined for eight runs in the last two innings.
Hopkins took a 1-0 lead after the second as catcher Jonathan Hettleman singled to right scoring first baseman Richie Carbone. The Blue Jays would tack another run on in the third as left fielder Connor McCarthy singled through the right side scoring second baseman Kyle Gillen.
Ursinus got on the board in the third when freshman right fielder Timo Muro tripled to right scoring senior second baseman Ralph Aurora. Muro would later score on a double by freshman designated hitter Austin Feuerman. The Bears would take the lead in the seventh when senior center fielder Josh Schnell singled down the right field line scoring Muro.
In the eighth, Hopkins had the bases loaded when pinch runner Thomas Gordon was thrown out at home trying to advance on a pickoff at first.
In the ninth, shortstop Conor Reynolds doubled and would advance to third on a throwing error. Gillen then singled to the right, scoring Reynolds to tie the score at 3-all. A two-run single by centerfielder Craig Hoelzer gave Hopkins a 5-3 lead. Hoelzer would later score on a RBI single by McCarthy for a 6-3 Hopkins lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the frame, sophomore shortstop Devyn Kerr got hit by a pitch, then scored on a RBI double to center by Muro. Muro scored RBI double by Feuerman to get within one. Freshman Jose Colon would pinch run for Feuerman, and would score on a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Chris Jablonski with two outs to tie the score at 6-all.
In the tenth, Hopkins got two aboard with one out, but Gillen lined into a double play at third to end the threat. In the bottom the inning, freshman third baseman CJ Diana singled to start the inning, then advanced on a double by junior pinch hitter James Hoff. After Kerr was intentionally walked, Aurora was hit by pitch to force in the inning run.
Muro, Feuerman, Diana all finished with two hits, while freshman left fielder Austin Kurey was 3-for-5. Aurora was hit by pitch three times in the game.
Senior Chris Ryder got the win in relief, moving to 2-1. He walked two in 1.2 innings of work. Vince Piccioni went 8.1 innings and got a no decision, striking out three and walking three. Senior Steve Berardi gave up four hits and one earn run, while not recording an out.
For Hopkins, reliever Ross Lazicky took the loss falling to 0-1. Jacob Enterlin went eight innings, striking out seven and walking two. Hopkins got three hits from McCarthy, while Gillen scored twice.
In game two, Hopkins scored six runs in the first two innings, then scored twice in the fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings in the win. Right fielder Mike Denlinger went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Hoelzer was 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
Ursinus scored once in the fifth freshman catcher Avery Perez scored on a groundout by Aurora. Ursinus would plate two in the ninth on a RBI groundout by Matt Caldwell and a RBI single by Jake Banks.
Louis Aikins took the loss for Ursinus, falling to 0-3. He gave up five earned runs in 0.2 innings, walking two. Trevor Williams went eight innings, striking out eight for his third win of the season.
Ursinus begins the Swarthmore series on Tuesday in Delco.
