Baseball wins home opener, 5-4, over TCNJ

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team picked up a win in their home opener Thursday afternoon, with a 5-4 decision over The College of New Jersey.

The Bears (5-5) used six different pitchers and allowed just six hits in the win.

Freshman pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) got the win, as he threw two innings striking out two. He did give up three earned runs and walked five. Wright came in for starter sophomore Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson). Christakos pitched two innings to start, allowing just one run and two hits.

The Bears took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as senior designated hitter Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) singled home senior outfielder Brett Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen). Schwager would later score on a RBI double from senior outfielder Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon). Clarke then came around to score on a RBI double by sophomore first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford)

After the Lions took the lead in the top of the third, Ursinus took the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame. Scoring the last two runs of the game, Guthridge tied the score as he came home on a RBI single by sophomore center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove).

The winning run scored when Gresh later scored on a single by sophomore second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley).

Umstead finished 3-for-5 with a run scored, while Clarke, Guthridge and senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) also had two hits.

Senior pitcher Corey Weaver (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) picked up the save, allowing just one hits in the last two innings.

Ursinus will host PSU-Abington on Saturday in a doubleheader.
