Swarthmore Softball Takes Two From Ursinus

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Swarthmore College Softball swept Ursinus on Saturday, winning the first 4-3 in eight innings and the other 8-5 in seven.

Senior Frankie Ponziani and junior Marit Vike each had five hits on the day, helping the Garnet improve to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Game One: Swarthmore 4, Ursinus 3

Senior Emily Bowman got the start in the circle for Swarthmore and kept Ursinus to two runs over six innings.

The Garnet matched that run total on RBI singles from Ponziani and Vike in the second and fourth innings, respectively.

Junior Mackenzie Ward took the ball from Bowman and surrendered one run in the top of the eighth. However, Ponziani's walk-off double that scored two runs in the bottom of that inning helped Ward pick up her third win of the season.

Sophomore Kennedy Kings, sophomore Kalli Segel and freshman Victoria Overbeck added two hits apiece. Kings sits atop the team with a .483 batting average this season.

Game Two: Swarthmore 8, Ursinus 5

The Bears jumped out to an early lead, plating three in the first. The Garnet responded quickly as Kings and Ponziani had RBI singles in the bottom of the inning, and sophomore Gabriella Natoli tied the game with a double in the second.

After two scoreless innings, Swarthmore pulled away in the fifth with five runs. Kings, Ponziani, Overbeck and sophomore Emilie Morse all drove in runs that innings.

Freshman Maddie Bowe pitches six innings of relief and earned her second win of the season in the circle. She struck out five, walked none and allowed two runs.

Swarthmore hits the road for two games at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
