Solid Split To Start Spring Sunshine Swing
ORLANDO, Fla. (3/06/23)---Concordia opened serve on its annual spring trip to Florida on Monday, and came away with a split in its two matches. The Cobbers edged Ursinus (Pa.) 5-4 in a dramatic win in the opener. CC then fell 6-1 to Division II Univ. of Sioux Falls in the second match of the trip.
The Cobbers took control of their match with Ursinus by winning two of the three doubles bouts. Concordia's Top 2 tandems both posted 8-1 wins. Raquel Egge and Mary Skorich recorded their team-leading fifth doubles win of the year at the No.1 spot. Anna Hacker and Lizzie Allan followed suit at No.2 doubs and are now 4-5 on the year.
The singles matches would go all the way to the wire with Egge providing the match-clinching win. She opened her match at No.1 singles with a 6-2 victory in the first set. She dropped a tight 7-5 decision in the second, but then rallied and pulled away in the super-set tie-breaker by a score of 10-5.
The win gave Egge a 5-4 record in singles play this year with all nine matches coming at the No.1 singles spot.
Emily Savageau was one of two other CC players to post singles wins, as the teams split the six singles bouts. Like Egge, Savageau had to earn her victory in the super-set. Also, like Egge, she won easily in the first set (6-0), but was edged in the second 7-5 and won 10-5 in the tie-breaker.
Allan also provided a team point for the Cobbers with her win at No.5 singles. Allan didn't need the dramatics. She posted a 7-5, 5-2 straight win which was her team-leading sixth singles win of the season.
The Cobbers battled Sioux Falls in a match that was closer than the score line. Playing with DII scoring rules, CC lost the single team in doubles play by falling in two of the three doubles matches. Both of the Concordia losses could have gone either way with Egge and Skorich losing 6-4, and Hacker and Allan falling 6-4.
Erin Borchard teamed with freshman Julia Wolf for the first time in the season and won 6-4 at No.3 doubles.
Borchard turned around and won the only team point for CC against the Panthers. She was able to capture a 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-8 win at No.6 singles.
The win ties Borchard with Allan for most singles victories on the year. Both players are 6-5 in singles play this year.
UP NEXT: Concordia will two more matches on Tuesday, Mar. 7. CC will face California (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and then Wittenberg at 6 p.m.
