The Short Story: The 15
th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored a goal in each half to defeat visiting and 19
th-Ursinus Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins grabbed the early lead on great individual effort by junior
Katie McErlean. She took a pass from junior
Sophie Kim, dribbled around several Bear defenders and then backhanded a shot into the top of the cage from about 10 yards out at 8:27.
• Ursinus had a great chance just 2:36 into the second half to tie the game when the Bears were awarded a penalty stroke. Bridget Sherry took the stroke for the visitors but junior
Jodie Baris made the save to maintain the Blue Jays' lead.
• Ursinus then pulled goalie Jules Singer and sent Erin McIlhenny in as a kicking back with 3:15 to play in the game. Just 34 seconds later, Hopkins scored to push its lead to two. McErlean sent the ball into the circle, but a Bears' defender sent it back out. The ball came right to McErelan, who lifted it high towards the Ursinus goal. A wide-open
Izzy Thompson flicked it over the head of McIlhenny and into the cage with 2:41 to play. Â
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 3-22 all-time against Ursinus and snaps a six-game losing streak in the series. This is the second time the Blue Jays have shutout the Bears.
• The Blue Jays run their win streak to 10 games, the longest since an 11-game win streak in 2008. Hopkins' 14-1 start is the best in program history, besting that same 2008 squad that was 13-2 through its first 15 games. Â
• Hopkins' 14 wins also match its total from last season and are three shy of the school single-season record.
Â
