Stargell Williams, a former star thrower at Florida State University, enters his fourth year with the program as an Assistant Track & Field Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. Williams works primarily with the Bears’ throwers.

Under Williams’ guidance, the Bears have crowned 11 individual conference champions and set 5 school records. At the 2021 outdoor conference championship, Griffin McMann collected three gold medals (Shot Put, Hammer, Discus) and was named Outstanding Field Performer of the Meet. Evan Giannetti won the Javelin. His toss of 194-4 qualified him for the NCAA Championship. Both Giannetti and McMann were recognized as All-Region by the USTFCCCA. On the women’s side, Izzy Deal took home gold in both the Javelin (136-6) and Shot Put (38-4). Deal finished out her 2021 season with an 8th place finish at the NCAA Championship. She was recognized as All American and All-Region for her efforts. Coach Williams was named Mideast Region men’s assistant coach of the year by the USTFCCCA.

After graduating from Florida State in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in sport management, Williams served as a volunteer assistant with the track and field program and as a facilities and event management assistant before accepting his next post at Hillsdale College. In his two years there, Williams produced four NCAA Division II qualifiers in addition to an All-American in the hammer.

Williams’ tremendous athletic career started at Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College, where he was a three-time national championship thrower and two-time All-American at the NJCAA level before returning to his hometown to join the Division I Seminoles. Williams helped lead Florida State to two Atlantic Coast Conference titles during his time there, and was a two-time NCAA East Regional qualifier in the shot put. He was runner-up in the shot put at the 2013 ACC Championship and ended his career with a personal-best mark of 59-4.5 at the 2015 NCAA East prelims.

Williams is a USATF Level 1 certified coach.
