Pete Smith is in his 16th season as head coach of the men’s tennis program at Ursinus. A 1991 graduate of Ursinus and a member of the school's Hall of Fame for Athletes, Smith continues to set new benchmarks for the men’s tennis program. Smith’s most successful season came in 2013, when the team notched a 14-7 mark, setting a new school record for wins in a season. The record-setting year earned the Bears an appearance in the Centennial Conference playoffs, another first for the program. Following the season, Smith was named Centennial Conference Coach of the Year – his second such honor. He was also awarded the USTA Philadelphia District College Coach of the Year in 2016.

In his first 15 years at the helm, the Bears have posted a 144-122 record, making him the winningest tennis coach in Ursinus history. During that time, he has coached eight players that earned All-Centennial Conference honors.

In 2017, the Bears put together a 12-7 season that earned them their first ITA Atlantic South Regional ranking in school history. They finished that season ranked 19th in the region. In 2022, the men went 10-7 and finished the season ranked 7th in NCAA Region III.

During his time at Ursinus, Smith was no stranger to men's tennis. As the number one singles player on the team, he captured the 1990 Middle Atlantic Conference Singles Championship and earned 50 career singles victories. His athletic talents were not limited to the tennis court, as Smith also excelled as a member of the basketball team. Smith scored 1,443 points in his Ursinus hoops career, good for seventh all time at the school. Aside from coaching, Smith also serves his alma mater as a member of the Hall of Fame committee. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

Smith lives in King of Prussia with his wife Kimberly, a 1986 Ursinus graduate and an assistant coach with the women's basketball team, and his daughter Olivia.
