Ursinus Athletics to host "Selma Week"

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus Athletics will host a "Selma Week" as part of the college's annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.

The spring semester at Ursinus will once again begin with a celebration of MLK Week. Throughout the week, a number of events will take place both virtually and on campus; those activities will include a series of lightning talks, film screenings, discussions, and plans for the future The campus will also display the words of prominent African American artists, thinkers, writers, activists, performers, and others, all of which were suggested by members of the community.

Tuesday night will feature a Zoom screening of Ava DuVernay's powerful drama, Selma, which depicts Dr. King's epic march from Selma to Montgomery to secure equal voting rights for African Americans in an event that changed history forever. After the movie, students will take part in a discussion led by Ashley Henderson (Director of the Institute for Inclusion and Equity), Terrence Williams (Assistant Dean of Students), and Marqus Hunter (Associate Athletic Director).

Wednesday commences UC Athletics Selma Week, during which each athletic program will participate in team-wide discussions about the film, fighting injustice, and what it means in the context of their own lives. Those discussions will include a reading of an op-ed by former activist and House of Representatives member John Lewis, whose legacy began with his nonviolent protests in Montgomery, and extended far beyond.
